This month’s feature business is Appaloosa Trading Co. located at 129 W Colorado Ave and their new store, Appaloosa’s Home & Ranch located at 100 W Colorado Ave.
Owners Michael & Deb Gibson have been in the leather and fashion wear business since 1982 with three stores in Durango, CO. Visiting Telluride one day with the family, Michael saw an empty retail space in the New Times Building and the next day rented it. They had that space until the old bank building site of where Butch Cassidy robbed his first bank on June 24, 1889 became available and moved Appaloosa Trading Company into the spot it is today at 129 W. Colorado Ave.
Starting out with a bunch of tools an elderly man gave Michael at the age of 12 and opening his first store in Boulder at the age of 17, leather has always been Michael’s passion and he is still designing over 90% of the belts and leather goods Appaloosa sells today. They can also provide a custom belt or jacket for that special present you may need to get this holiday season. When walking into Appaloosa you will notice all the wonderful leather goods, but they also carry Men’s, Women’s & Children’s Apparel with great hats, shirts, jackets and boots for anyone with an appreciation for quality and uniqueness.
Michael and Deb now have opened a second store on Main Street Telluride called Appaloosa’s Home & Ranch store featuring furniture, mirrors and decor for the home. When opening their first store here in Telluride the plan was to have all products that they sold in Durango in this store. But soon they found that the furniture was getting lost or covered by all the other merchandise in the store, so they decided to open the second store. Michael is already getting rave reviews from visitors, second home owners and locals alike.
Having sold product at Rodeos all over the US including the Denver Western Show and the NFR in Vegas, Michael is use to setting up a store quickly and had the Home & Ranch store open 4 days after signing the lease in the Winter Crown building.
